Legion of Substitute Heroes Special

Among the coolest aspects of the Silver Age tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes were the occasional “Legionnaire try-outs.” Young, would-be heroes from all over the universe would audition for a spot on the future super-team’s roster, and, of course, some made it, and some didn’t. Five heroes who didn’t make the team—Polar Boy, Chlorophyll Kid, Fire Lad, Stone Boy, and Night Girl—formed the Legion of Substitute Heroes. Their mission: to secretly aid the Legion whenever they could. In this 1985 one-shot, writer Paul Levitz and artist Keith Giffen play the Substitute Heroes—who have added Infectious Lass, Porcupine Pete, and Color Kid to their ranks—for a good number of laughs, even as they face a longtime Legion foe, the very deadly Pulsar Stargrave.
