In 1995, Jerry Ordway brought the character of Shazam back into the mainstream DC universe with his award-winning Power of Shazam graphic novel. As the monthly series begins, it has been four years since the homeless orphan Billy Batson first learned the magic word that would turn him into the World’s Mightiest Mortal. During this time, he’s been trying to make it through school while living by himself, and periodically saving the world.

When Batson was given the role of Shazam by the old man on the Rock of Eternity, it was considered a sacred duty. But now, Billy’s having a hard time holding his many lives together. For a time, he is even stripped of his powers for not taking them seriously enough.
