Seamonsters and Superheroes

Offbeat anthology series from writer-artist Scott Mills is far from the B-movie fun its title promises. Mills’ artwork, often resembling childhood doodles, is an acquired taste, and so are the unusual, sometimes extremely short, tales contained within. Mills uses amphibian creatures and costumed crime-fighters to explore a surreal and disorienting look at the world in stories that are humorous and very weird. There’s no thematic unity to the tales other than their subject matter. Stylistically, though, the book lets the freak flag fly without uncompromising consistency.
