“One Adam-12, One Adam-12!” Strange as it may seem, those memorable words from the police dispatcher ushered in a new era in TV cop shows, which had until then been dominated by stiff, mechanical detecting machines (see Dragnet) rather than warm-and-fuzzy real people types. Adam-12 laid the groundwork for police dramas that focussed on human issues instead of plot devices, and helped rehabilitate the image of big city cops, which had been badly damaged during the 1960s. For this development we cannot blame Gold Key: they merely delivered a solid comic version of the television show with a little bit more mystery and action added in for spice, and cool photo covers of our heroes, Pete and Jim.
