Directory to a Nonexistent Universe

    (ICG, 1987)
™ and ©1987 Eclipse Comics

In the late 1980s, amidst the wave of multi-volume super-hero directories, indexes and Who’s-Who’s came this lighthearted spoof from ICG, an imprint of Eclipse. Comics humorist Kerry Callen provides a glimpse of a whole new absurd universe in this one-shot directory spoof. Featured here are such laugh-out-loud creations as the Black-n-Blue Panther (so named for his tendency to get beat up a lot), Pete Moss (a Swamp Thing-style character) and Pull-Yourself-Together-Man, among many others. A “bonus” story at the end puts some of these characters to good use in the first and only story to come from the “Nonexistent Universe.” Although it’s a bit dated, any fan who carefully collected the DC and Marvel character directories will smile more than a few times at this arch piece of satire.
