Very much like the ancient Celts of Britain and Scotland, barbarian warrior Brath Mac Garen finds himself in the position of forming alliances with various clans to stave off an invasion by hordes of invading soldiers who are reminiscent of the Roman Legions. Writer Chuck Dixon’s series is not a sword-and-sorcery series; in fact, it is only very loosely tied to the other titles in the Crossgen universe and magic is not an overt element in the barbarian’s story. And unlike Conan, Robert E. Howard’s classic pulp hero who starred in several Marvel titles – some of which were penned by Dixon, Brath is not a loner by nature: he has a family, friends, and loyal followers and wants to secure their futures. This is the story of the survival of a culture, and at its heart are the people who make up that culture. Brath is a pleasure to read, and given the obvious amount of research that has gone into producing the first few issues, it is obviously a labor of love for the creative team.
