Wizard Works

    (Fantasy General, 1985)
™ and ©1985 Fantasy General Company

Wizard Works was one of a number of titles launched simultaneously in 1985 by Fantasy General Comics. It was a boom time for black-and-white comics, and Fantasy General planned to make its mark with titles like Heavy Armor, Alpha Track, Charlie the Caveman, and Future Course. To a one, however, they appeared and disappeared with little notice.

For its part, Wizard Works was planned as a four-issue anthology with several fantasy-based features running in serial format. Few rose above rehashing old movie plot lines (“Sorcerer of the Black Void” virtually lifting Poltergeist), or telling middling fantasy/elf tales. Whereas titles like Elfquest manage to create a world full of engaging characters, Wizard Works seems more an earnest, well-meaning work of fan fiction.
