Since December of 1941, when Pep Comics #22 hit the stands, Archie, Jughead, Veronica, Betty, Reggie, Moose, Mr. Weatherbee, Pop Tate, and Ms. Grundy stepped into a time warp and have not emerged since. For this we are grateful. Archie Comics has dug into its vaults and given readers the opportunity to peruse history once more. Each of the volumes takes us back to a simpler time, and, from that vantage point, it is easy to see why Archie is still with us today. In the first few years, Archie was not the clean-cut kid we know and love. Jug was more like a “Bowery boy” than good boy. Veronica was more sultry, and Betty was a little more svelte. Over the 1940s, the art changed from a harder edge to the simple style we all know today, and the tales from Pep Comics, Jackpot Comics, and Laugh Comics reflect the changing post–War society. Stephen King and Paul Castiglia contribute forewords to the volumes.

NOTE: This series is a collection of some of the best stories from that era featuring “good, clean, wholesome, family oriented comics” which is probably why the series survived the seductive comic “trash” witch-hunts of the Fifties. Archie was probably the one title (or series of titles) that embodied the heart of the Comics Code Authority before it was even established in 1954.
