Death Takes a Holiday

The title character in this comic-strip collection is a likable grim reaper (actually, he’s not so grim, and his reaping is minimal to nonexistent) whose facial features are entirely obscured by his death-dealing outfit. Amazingly, Massey manages to inject a vital personality into the character, despite the lack of detail, and his simple drawing style is a perfect fit for his quirky sense of humor.

Death is a social commentator of sorts whose cynicism and humor regarding religion and the war in Iraq will strike a chord with readers, regardless of their political or religious persuasion. While many will be offended by the less-than-reverent handling of religious figures, it’s hard to argue with Death’s bafflement over why guardian angels are often slow on the uptake.

Most of all, Death Takes a Holiday is just plain funny. It is written and drawn in such a way that it’s easy to take less than seriously, and an extended bit with a genie is something everyone can enjoy.
