Flowers and Bees
(Viz, 2003-2005)
™ and © Viz Communications, Inc.
OK, this is unusual: Total loser decides the only way he’ll get a girl is to submit to the Zen beauty–torture treatments of The World of Beautiful Men shop (staffed entirely by clones of Carmen Giya from The Producers).
Their brutal abuse is supposed to give him a taste of what girls go through, while learning that they don’t teach cool in school—but naturally he’s one slow learner. Every chance he does get to “hook up,” he muffs by being a jerk, first with an older woman so desperate for human contact she’ll proposition a high-school boy on the street, then a married–too–young shopaholic who wants so desperately to be heard that a groping teen will do.
Flowers & Bees plays like a hard–core cross of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and the ’60s film The Knack (and How to Get It), set in a dehumanized Japan where simple human kindness has become an endangered species. It would be funny if it weren’t so damn sad.
— S.A. Bennett
