JSA: The Unholy Three

If there was anything “wrong” with Harris’ previous JSA Elseworlds mini–series, The Liberty File, it was that readers didn’t get to see enough of the DC universe revised to meet his specifications. He corrects that in The Unholy Three, which is rich with guest shots and special appearances by everyone from Two-Face to Shiera Carter to Johnny Thunder. (The only character missing, who would be a natural for this morally ambivalent world, is Manhunter Paul Kirk.)

But the focus again is on a trio of special field agents who, in spite of their costumes, are cool professionals instead of swashbuckling heroes—this time, the third man being Superman himself. Anyone looking for a good old–fashioned super–hero slugfest be warned: There’s no “action” here, just violence, brutal and messy, and, if anything, Harris’ post–war world is an even darker place, rich with an atmosphere of desperation that’s befitting an engaging espionage drama. And wait until you’re hit with that final–page twist…
