Popular Comics was one of the first comic book titles published, debuting on newsstands in 1936. At that time, comics reprinted complete stories from several weeks’ worth of Sunday strips, which featured better art and storytelling than most of the original comic book series. Classic comic strip characters such as Dick Tracy, Terry and the Pirates, Smilin’ Jack, Felix the Cat, Little Orphan Annie, and Mutt and Jeff were reprinted in the pages of Popular Comics for the benefit of readers who did not get them in their regular papers, or who had missed episodes in the often-complicated plots of these series.

Popular stuck with this format into the 1940s, introducing a few original characters such as Supermind along the way. Popular presented comics of all genres, from adventure to gag strips, true crime to funny animals, in six eight-page chunks in each issue.
