The Amazon
(COMICO, 1989)
™ and ©1989 Steven T. Seagle and Tim Sale
The Amazon is a tale structured much like Joseph Conrad’s famous story “The Heart Of Darkness.” In it, reporter Malcolm Hillard travels to the heart of the Amazon river in order to investigate equipment sabotage and other strange goings-on at a construction site, where workers have been steadily demolishing miles of rain forest. The spooked workers blame the weird events on the Jatapus, a local tribe. Hillard, however, believes that it could be the work of an American worker, missing since a few days earlier. The construction company, meanwhile, will do anything to divert suspicion from itself. In this story, Hillard stays neutral on the political implications and sticks to uncovering the mystery. Nevertheless, this three-issue mini-series educates its readers about the deforestation of the Amazon Basin and the “ethnocide” of its indigenous people.
The Amazon was created by Steven Seagle and Tim Sale.
