Dark Horse Classics: Godzilla: King of the Monsters

    (Dark Horse, 1998)
™ and ©1987, 1998 Toho Co., Ltd.

The 1987 special reprinted here kicked off Dark Horse’s run on the Godzilla franchise. The much-hyped 1998 premiere of the Hollywood Godzilla movie no doubt had a lot to do with the timing of this comic’s release.

This story gives an origin of sorts to both Godzilla and the rest of the monsters that have appeared in so many movies. It begins when a construction crew, working on a new high-rise, finds and tries to excavate a strange, radioactive rock. Scientists determine that the rock itself contains no radioactive ore, but seems to be channeling the radiation from somewhere else. In reality, it’s sending out a call—a call that awakens monsters that have lain dormant for thousands of years. Soon, the sky is darkened with insects as big as clouds, giant birds from the prehistoric age, and worst of all, the giant, fire-breathing lizard called Godzilla.
