The How to Draw Comics Comic
(Solson, 1985)
™ and ©1985 Solson Publications, Inc.
Sensible primer that supplies exactly what it says on the cover by providing the basics of comics illustration from the tools required to handle specific situations. John Byrne provided pencil and ink sketches, roughs and breakdowns throughout the one-shot at a time when his art was still detailed. It’s the detail that’s the problem. While prospective artists should be able to create their own roughs and machinery, it rather defeats the object of the publication that Byrne’s samples are reduced to mud by very cheap printing. Still, even today those wanting to draw comics could do far worse than look at this.
