Sniper & Rook

    (Beta 3, 1999-Present)
™ and © John M. Metych III

The silly spy genre, currently represented by Danger Girl and not much else, could certainly use some company. Enter Sniper & Rook, a pair of gun-toting, mask-wearing secret agents who may or may not have a thing for each other. Think Moonlighting with shots to the head.

Creator John Metych has a winning concept, but each issue takes forever to come out, a sad reality of self-publishing. Over five years span the first mini-comic to the latest issue. It also doesn’t help that each issue continues into the next. If Metych can bring out his comics more often, then he’ll have a better chance of building a fanbase. The art ranges from competent to outstanding and generally improves as the series progresses; however, the original artist, Jonathan Sukarangsan, was showing excellent progress but didn’t continue past #4. A glance at the website reveals that Metych plans a different artist for each upcoming issue. Not a wise move.

Despite these quirks, Sniper & Rook is witty and engaging, and deserves a look.
