Dell’s Combat series differed from most war comics in sticking to the actual facts of various battles, rather than merely using them as a backdrop against which fictionalized stories were told. Certainly, Combat did its share of dramatization, but by and large the real story was in the daring plans and individual courage that turned the tide of battle. These ranged from the British commando assault on the German U-Boat base at Saint-Nazaire to John F. Kennedy’s exploits as the commander of PT-109.
