Although this series bills itself as “…pre-code adventure and passion for mature readers,” the content is actually quite tame by today’s standards. Sure, there’s the odd exposed stocking or catfight between two rival women, but all of this would scarcely raise an eyebrow today.

Spicy Tales draws heavily from the “true crime” genre, reprinting tales from such magazines as the 1950s’ Crime Smashers and the late 1930s’ Spicy Adventure Stories. The latter title tends to be the weakest of the lot, being rather badly drawn and with plots far skimpier than the heroine’s negligees.
