The Transmutation of Ike Garuda
(Epic, 1991-1992)
™ and ©1991 Elaine Lee & James Sherman
The Transmutation of Ike Garuda is a science-fiction tale about a hardboiled detective of the same name. He is hired by a man named big Jim Diamond. “Big Jim” needs Ike to track down a teleportation device stolen from his planet, the Diamond Minds. This device is a mystery in itself, developed under the tightest possible security, with no engineer privy to exactly what was being built. What’s more, it only sends across space—a different device would be required to “receive” them back again. Finally, there’s the matter of security: the device was as big as a man, and the customs scanners would have definitely picked it up. In a flash of inspiration, however, Garuda guessed that the only way the thieves could have stolen the device was by dividing it into cubes given out as promotional chachkas.
This two-part prestige format mini-series was published by Epic Comics in the summer of 1991. Elaine Lee (Vamps) and James Sherman created the title.
