Tura Satana

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, meet Tura Satanna. She used to ride motorcycles and beat the stuffing out of men too, but back in the pre-girl power days that sort of thing made her the bad guy.

Mike Hoffman has brought her back and while today she may be a little more morally ambiguous, she’s no less bad (in the ’70s sense of the word). In a story that looks like John Buscema drawing for E.C. Comics, Tura wanders onto the set of what’s obviously a cheap, nasty ’60s B-Movie (the kind set in the desert because, well, the desert’s free) and gets involved with some slack jawed hippies, a scheming landowner and a corrupt sheriff.

In short order she’s doling out doses of her special brand of ice-cold aggression to everyone who deserves it — which is pretty much anyone who crosses her path. And, damn, it’s cool to watch. The only downside being that there isn’t anyone here who can give Tura a run for her money; maybe in the next issue she could wander onto the set of a legally nonactionable version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Those Chainsaw folks have had it coming for a while now.
