World of Krypton (2nd Series)

™ and ©1987 DC Comics

Not to be confused with 1979’s World of Krypton (with Howard Chaykin), in 1987, writer John Byrne and artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy, Cosmic Odyssey) show us the second installment of World of Krypton. While the first series dealt with the final days of Superman’s point of origin, the planet Krypton, this series goes a little farther back.

The story follows Van-L, the son of Ran-L (Superman’s ancestors?) as he delves into the mysterious behavior of another Kryptonian, Kan-Z. It seems that Kryptonians have long, youthful lives by being “replenished” from time to time by harvesting replacement parts from dormant clones kept for every citizen of Krypton. Now a faction has arisen that believes this practice is little more than slavery or cannibalism. Krypton itself will descend into civil war unless Van-L can prove his newly won manhood, and defuse the tense situation.
