Help (Vol. 1)
(Warren, 1960-1961, 1964-1965)
™ and © Warren
Following Mad, Trump and Humbug, Help! is Harvey Kurtzman’s last major attempt at editing a humor magazine. But this time out, instead of focusing solely on comic book, movie, TV and radio parodies, Help! pushed an agenda of photo comic strips, also known as fumettis. These fumettis (as well as the front covers of the magazine) featured many known and up-and-coming celebrities of the day.
The most famous of these was one featuring a very young and unknown John Cleese professing his love for a Barbie doll. Many underground artists also made their first published appearance including Gilbert Shelton with his Wonder Warthog. Definitely for fans of Kurtzman’s other work.
