The Brute
(Atlas, 1975)
™ and ©1975 Atlas Comics, published by Seaboard Periodicals, Inc.
Eons ago, bestial precursors of man roamed the earth, alongside the giant mastodons they hunted for food. During a hunt, one of the ape-men fell from a cliff and became lodged in an ice floe. There he lay in suspended animation until the modern day, when the warmth of a newly built atomic energy plant melted the ice and allowed him to escape.
The Brute inhabited a cave for a time until he was discovered by three boys out on an expedition. The brute killed two of them, and the third barely escaped to warn the town. The brute was captured and placed in the custody of Dr. Turner, an anthropologist. It might have all ended there, but the father of one of the slain boys broke the Brute out of confinement, meaning to shoot it down “as it was trying to escape.” Instead, the Brute killed him. In the two issues that remained of this short-lived series, the Brute escaped and tried to survive in the modern world.
