You Damn Kid! is Owen Dunne’s semi-autobiographical comic strip about his youth but it is intended for an adult readership. Dunne and his sister Dot didn’t have kite-eating trees and Great Pumpkins to contend with in their upbringing. Instead, they had an alcoholic aunt, a developmentally disabled neighbor, long-suffering nuns for teachers, and other equally dysfunctional acquaintances. As the title of this volume suggests, when dragged along by Aunt Claire, Owen and Dot had to make their own fun at A.A. Meetings. (Ashtray forts, anyone?)

The tales are a nostalgic look at the questions we asked and the things we said as kids that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time. With the benefit of hindsight, however, they are often outrageous. As adults reading these stories, we can understand why we received so many sideways glances.

The art resembles any standard kid comic strip, until up pops a nudist neighbor or a flatulent uncle. This comic relies upon many “adult themes.” For a refreshing change of pace, we mean that in a good way.
