Part 1950s noir detective story, part ode to tiki culture, Hawaiian Dick is an entertaining mini-series built around moody, evocative art, interesting characters and Hawaiian ghost stories. A kidnapped girl leads to one stolen car, one dead beauty in the trunk and an extremely disgruntled crime boss. Throw in some angry Hawaiian god-ghosts and it all adds up to a tough case to crack for haole private investigator Byrd and his Hawaiian police detective partner Mo Kalama. This mini is cross between the best episodes of “Magnum P.I.” and “Hawaiian 5-0” with a dash of 50s horror films thrown in for atmosphere.
