Nagdila
(Mahrwood, 2005)
™ and © 2005 Eric Mahr
Shmuel HaNagid, aka Nagdila, wasn’t “just” a scholar, poet, scientist, and warrior. He served as Grand Vizier of Islamic Spain, helping to bring about an unparalleled golden age of peace and prosperity in which Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived side by side.
It’s a rousing romance, in the adventurous sense of the word, a thrilling narrative of a mostly forgotten era full of battles, pirates, and last-minute escapes. Bringing it to utterly convincing life is the meticulously researched art of Spanish artist Esteve Polls, which features luxurious backgrounds and strong, expressive figures. And while definitely told from a Jewish perspective, it scrupulously avoids defaming any faith.
Readers more used to the Conan the Barbarian school of dispute resolution will undoubtedly become restless reading about someone who purposely avoids bloodshed whenever possible. Moreover, Nagdila resists the temptation to inflict bloody revenge on those who wronged him when he has the power to—and plenty of legitimate reasons to feel wronged. This handsome album is the perfect rebuttal to anyone saying truly noble heroes are unrealistic.
