The Red Flannel Squirrel

Scattered across a little boy’s room, dozens of toys show the signs of playful use. They are ratty and worn, but also happy. All but one.

High atop a shelf sits a stuffed squirrel, her condition as new as the day she was purchased. She’s jealous of the attention paid to the other toys, but takes pride in her value as a collector’s item. She often taunts them, pointing out their rips and tears. But they are proud of their shabbiness. Proof, they claim, of the little boy’s love for each of them. All but the pristine squirrel, apparently.

Fearing she is missing something wonderful, she vows to become even more loved than the other toys. But the squirrel has learned the wrong lesson. Mistaking natural wear and tear for abuse, she happily jumps into the jaws of the family dog, basking in love even as she’s torn to shreds.
