The newspaper strip was created in 1937 by Al Capp (1909-1979) and drawn by Reuben Van Buren (1891-1987) and, though it appeared as a continuing feature in a number of anthology comic-book titles, it also had a brief run on its own. Later written by Capp’s brother, Eliot Caplin, the soap-opera strip dealt with a city youth living with spinster Abbie in a small town.
