Domino Lady: The Complete Collection

Ellen Patrick, aka Domino Lady, will evoke little recognition today, even from many pulp magazine buffs. The shapely blonde went into over-the-top action in 1936’s Saucy Romantic Adventures and Mystery Adventure Magazine garbed in an evening gown but “disguised” by her domino mask. Some comics readers will guess at a possible inspiration for Marvel’s Golden Age The Blonde Phantom a decade later: She’d quickly change from street clothes into evening gown (with DL showing “her perfect back and kissable shoulders”) and black mask when she went to seek vengeance and/or justice. (The Blonde Phantom had a longer career than The Domino Lady, but comics have more pictures per adventure.) Aside from the unfortunate choice of a sans-serif typeface (which makes the text harder than necessary to read), this collection is a terrific view of a comics precursor. The volume is lovingly produced, well researched (by Bernard A. Drew and Will Murray), and gorgeously illustrated (with both original pulp art and Steranko’s delicious interpretations) with the bonus of a new origin by Steranko. The silver-slipcased edition is a thing of beauty, complete with Steranko’s art in striking color.
