Tommy of the Big Top
(Best, 1948-1949)
™ and © Best
The last several issues of Thrilling Circus Adventures were re-titled after the star attraction, Tommy of the Big Top. Tommy is a teenage circus acrobat who tours with a colorful cast of fellow performers, sharp business operators and misfits of the midway. Illustrated with verve and atmosphere by John Lehti, Tommy of the Big Top is the kind of second-string Sunday comics section adventure strip that would populate the back pages of super-hero comics in the Golden Age. With the super-heroes in decline in the late 40s, Tommy merited his own book, with several full-length suspense and adventure stories in the circus setting.
