Don Simpson created a cult hit in the 1980s with Megaton Man, a sharply satirical superhero book starring a bumbling atomic-age hero with more than a passing similarity to Superman. Indeed, during its initial run the series spoofed well-known characters from DC and Marvel, while also critiquing the military-industrial complex and other political targets. Simpson resurrected his hero in the 1990s, on the Internet and as a backup feature in Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon. This Image mini-series collects all those strips in black and white.

Megaton Man himself gets somewhat lost here, so dense is the cast around him. Regulars from the old series, including Yarn Man, are on hand to join the crowd of new characters that Megaton Man must literally cart around from place to place. There’s a plot—something typically outlandish involving a horse with a curse on him, a wizened voodoo witch, and a beautiful jungle woman exchanging minds with a hulking cowboy gorilla—but it’s of secondary importance to the rapid-fire jokes.
