Gene Autry Comics

Gene Autry was country music’s first multimedia star from the early 1930s until the mid-1950s selling records, movies, radio, and television. Autry defined country music, cowboy songs and American music for two generations of listeners around the world. The Singing Cowboy would probably have been the first multimedia superstar had he been performing in the latter half of the 20th century with our insatiable appetite for content. Several of Autry’s “Cowboy Code” ethics are evident throughout this self-named title such as not possessing racially or religious intolerant ideas or assisting people in distress as well as his penchant for fisticuffs. Although the Native American dialog will make you cringe, they’re treated with more respect compared with other Western titles. Also, Autry was a master merchandiser; among his offerings were songbooks, comic books, Western apparel, children’s books, belts, and toys of every description. Not bad for a railroad telegrapher from Oklahoma.
