Halo, an Angel’s Story

    (Sirius, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Chris Knowles

Chris Knowles’ story is quite the departure from the norm. Set in the 1980s, it focuses on the experiences of the teenage Halo. The single daughter of uncaring parents, Halo is shunted from pillar to post. As she drifts through various locations, she is unaware that she has a guardian angel looking after her and intervening unobtrusively in pivotal moments of her life. The story is absorbing, despite a major drawback in Halo’s passive, blank slate of a character, and Knowles’ deliberately heavyset art adroitly overcomes the limitations of a talking heads comic. Each issue is a largely self-contained slice of Halo’s life, and should have an appeal beyond the conventional comic audience.
