Quit City
(Avatar, 2004)
™ and © Avatar Press, Inc.
Writer Warren Ellis (Planetary) has always been about innovation, and this title is true to that concept. As he indicates in the text piece at the back of the first issue of Quit City, Ellis had pondered what the modern comic book landscape might have looked like had super–heroes not come to be in 1938. Before Superman and his ilk, comic strips and books were more varied in their content than they are today: there were sci–fi heroes, detective heroes, and aviator heroes, among many others. In the eyes of the American public, pilots led exciting lives of one daredevil adventure after another; and Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart were always in the spotlight. Quit City focuses on Emma Pierson and how she comes to terms with an earthbound life after quitting the elite flying rescue force Aeropiratica. Can Emma survive on the ground? The answer to that question is not as simple as one might think.
— Thomas Moudry
