Nyoka the Jungle Girl
(Fawcett, 1945-1953)
™ and ©1949 Fawcett Publications, Inc.
Series continued from Jungle Girl #1
Prior to becoming the star of this third major jungle title (behind Jungle Comics and Sheena, Queen of the Jungle), Nyoka was the centerpiece of a number of movie serials. She was the daughter of one Dr. Meredith (later anthropologist Henry Gordon) who moved to Africa to avoid being confused with his evil twin brother “Slick.” Like Tarzan before her, she learned the ways of the jungle from the natives and soon became a white-skinned adventuress in her own right. Her comic appearances portrayed her in short and a low-cut blouse accented by a knife and revolver. Although meant as a girl’s adventure, Nyoka (and her somewhat skimpy outfits) no doubt also appealed to a sizeable male readership. Nevertheless, it was her quick wits, self-reliance, and occasional use of a solid right hook that made her more than just another leotard-clad damsel in distress.
