(Dell, 1960-1962)
™ and ©1960 Warner Bros. Pictures
Series continued from appearances in Four Color Comics
Chuck Jones’s Road Runner and Coyote cartoons are classic fables of unfulfilled desire played out against the surreal backdrop of the desert Southwest. So what if the Road Runner is one of the most annoying animated characters ever to take the screen? So what if the entire series is basically a set of Baroque elaborations on a single joke? The characters, situation and setting are so iconic that simply signifying them on screen or on the comic page is enough to call into play every reader’s most primal, childlike emotions. The Dell comic book adaptation tinkers with the formula somewhat by providing gobs of gratuitous dialogue to both Wile E. Coyote and the usually-monosyllabic Road Runner.
