Captain Gallant was mainly a comic book advertisement for the television show of the same name which starred action-hero star Buster Crabbe. The series premiered in 1955 and had two versions for the first issue. Heinz Manufacturing Company sponsored the comic and was given its own issue in which Captain Gallant tells all of the kids that they should use Heinz products. To appeal to the kids, the series was narrated by a little boy named Cuffy, the Foreign Legion’s mascot who related what a good time it was being the Legion mascot without any irony.

In the Heinz issue, the publisher featured actual pictures of Crabbe and Cuffy. Food trivia buffs who owned the Heinz version of issue #1 also got an ad checklist of the 57 products sold by Heinz (yes, this where Heinz 57 sauce gets its name).
