Beavis & Butt-Head

In addition to music videos, MTV has had a big role in popularizing a new wave of cartoon features, including Nickelodeon’s Ren & Stimpy and Rocko’s Modern Life. They also came up with something of a national sensation in the early 1990s with their own Beavis & Butt-Head.

Beavis (the blonde) and Butt-Head (the brunette) are two losers in their early teens. Too young to drive, and too stupid to have actual hobbies, they spend their time watching rock videos and getting into trouble. (In Marvel’s adaptation, they read comic books instead of watching videos.) Their infamy in popular culture lies partly in their antics, including a fire-setting episode which was blamed for inspiring a real-life trailer fire. The pair is even more famous for the spastic way they talk and laugh (“huh…huh-huh-huh!”). Unfortunately, this latter quality is hard to capture in print. As a result, the lowbrow humor here sometimes comes across as more cruel than funny.
