When Holden absorbed the dimensional artifact he had been sent to retrieve, he gained a new ability and killed his entire team. Now working for “the other side” in an organization run by the mysterious Mister Tao, his code name is Conductor. Any pain or trauma he receives, he is able to store and later to pass on to other organisms, usually with traumatic results.

Tao is impressed by the fact that Holden hates his former mentor, Lynch, the man who sent him to retrieve the artifact which gave him his powers. But Holden is sent on missions which make him wonder if Tao really believes he’s now on their side. It could be that he suspects Conductor of being a spy in their organization, a sleeper agent prepared to do anything his country asks in order to worm his way into the deepest parts of an organization that would do anything to keep its secrets safe.
