Shimura
(DC, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Rebellion Developments, Ltd.
It's 2117 AD, in the post–atomic future of Judge Dredd. The setting, however, is not that crimefighter’s Mega–City One, but essentially the Japanese equivalent, Hondo City. There are vast differences between the two cities; whereas Dredd's city is a futuristic, crime–ridden nightmare, in Hondo City, the advanced technology is offset by a culture reminiscent of Japan’s feudal past. Judge–inspectors like Shimura battle high–tech criminals with a mixture of futuristic technology and ancient weapons. For Shimura, an antique sword might be as effective as anything the scientists can come up with—even more so, when the villains have the same technology. Shimura’s life is also complicated by antiquated beliefs, like the notion that women are second–class citizens with no value… even though his most competent cadet is female.
This collection of Shimura stories, originally presented in the British comic book 2000 A.D., is written by Robbie Morrison and drawn primarily by Frank Quitely, although other talents also contribute. North American publishing rights to the comics were acquired by DC Comics in 2004.
