Batman/Catwoman: Trail of the Gun

Controversial political issues and mainstream super–hero comics rarely mix well, and this misguided mini–series is no exception. Writer Ann Nocenti leaves no stone unturned to attack gun owners, and leaves no ambivalence about where she stands on the idea of private gun ownership. A mythical “smart gun” turns up in Gotham, a gun whose bullets never miss the intended target. Catwoman intends to steal the weapon and sell it until she is intercepted by Batman, who also wants the gun—to destroy it.

With little or no opposing viewpoint, Trail of the Gun reads like a propaganda manual for anti–gun fanatics. Endless gun violence is portrayed, with usually only innocent people being shot down like the straw arguments propagated by Nocenti. Gun owners and manufacturers are limitedly portrayed as either sick opportunists or greedy, hateful businessmen.
