Vampirella/Witchblade

The cover declares Vampirella/Witchblade to be “The Ultimate Crossover Event!” Hold that thought: we’ll come back to it.

Once upon a time, comics crossovers were rare occurrences and special treats. When Superman met Spider-Man, that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Or so we thought. Now there are volumes and volumes of Marvel-DC crossovers. DC universe heroes spend every other Thursday at Dark Horse. And the “Bad Girls”?

At the height of the “Bad Girls” craze, these battling babes (some of whom were merely busty, brainless bimbos) crossed over in countless ways. Vampirella, Razor, Glory, Avengelyne, Areala, and a dozen others, many of whom have long since faded into obscurity, crossed over all the time. Vampi and Witchblade haven’t met before? Who can even keep track by now?

All that said, it’s a pretty average story. There’s no glaring fault; it’s just routine. It’s neither Vampirella nor Witchblade’s greatest hour. It’s not “ultimate” in any sense, and we’ve seen too many similar crossovers to consider it much of an “event.”

Save the hyperbole for JLA/Avengers or some similar project. Otherwise, run the risk of being branded the boy who cried “ultimate.”
