Catnip

    (Side Show, 1992)
©1992 Jim Ridings

This 1992 special collects Jim Ridings’ Catnip cartoons from the previous several years. Like many cartoon cats, Catnip is fond of howling on fences, rifling through garbage cans for dinner, and torturing his owner (who appears to be the long-suffering Mr. Arpad from the Fatt Family). Catnip stands apart from Garfield, Heathcliff, and the rest of the feline funnymen in that he displays a more philosophical—even a romantic side. He may howl Sinatra ballads and wake up the neighborhood, but he also can be found waxing poetic in full-page soliloquies to his elusive true love.
