Southpaw
(AdHouse, 2003)
™ and © AdHouse and Scott Morse
Scott Morse’s Southpaw graphic novel is formatted like the old Big Little Books; in other words, it’s about the size of a digest, and there is merely one panel of every page. But that’s where the comparison stops. Morse’s unusual minimalist artwork, adult dialogue, and odd coloring—everything has an orange hue—is strictly from the underground. Southpaw is a tiger who fights robots. He doesn’t talk, and he’s dressed like a private eye from ‘40s film noir. Originally appearing in the compilation Project: Telstar, Southpaw is a unique anthropomorphic hero, possibly the first robot-fighting tiger to ever appear in comics.
