When he was eighteen, John Oakes’ father gave him a tattoo. It was the same tattoo that all of his six older brothers bore: a skull with the caption “Born to Lose.” Not long afterward, John was behind bars on a breaking-and-entering rap. Indeed, it seems that this seventh son was indeed “born to lose.”
Then John met Tarrant, “the Tattooed Man.” Tarrant had some sort of grudge against the Green Lantern and bore a deep resentment against him. He gave John a set of very special tattoos—tattoos whose appearance spoke of mysticism and power.
It wasn’t long before Tarrant discovered just how special these tattoos really are…
