Here’s a comic book that’s like nothing else, influenced by Japanese art but in no way “mock manga.” It’s an epic fantasy that’s more concerned with character than sword or sorcery. It easily transcends genre with an unusual setting (for once, the desert isn’t made to seem like an arid Mad Max wasteland but, rather, a vivid, living place) and background that feels contemporary in every way. The leads may not have noses, but they do have television. There’s also a modern feel to the casual byplay between Sehv, would-be dragonslayer, and Leeka, would-be dragon, that captures the nuances of everyday conversation and the give and take between friends.

So much so that readers won’t complain that “nothing happens” in the first issue — at least in the blood-and-thunder sense. But Steve Uly, a strong contender for this year’s Best New Talent, is just getting started.
