Grendel Tales: Four Devils, One Hell

    (Dark Horse, 1993, 1994)
™ and ©1993 Matt Wagner

For Josef Mantovani, it all began when he was hired to find the killer of a Cajun restaurant owner. His question was, “Why Hire a P.I. when there are so many Grendels running around willing to do the job for free?”

Readers might ask the same question, but will have to read beyond the first issue for the answer. In this post-apocalyptic world, there are numerous people who have taken on the mask of vengeance and become a Grendel. They range from the deluded Bixby to the nefarious gambler Calhoun. They all have their own agendas, but ultimately are destined to come together.

Creator Matt Wagner uses this series to explore their various lives and to extend the concept of the Grendel. He has also indicated his plans to let other writers explore the character in future episodes of Grendel Tales.
