Part magazine, part comic, MixxZine is a great, thick, meaty publication, crammed full of translated Manga imported from Japan. In addition to the mega-popular Sailor Moon, MixxZine features three other noteworthy Manga serials: Ice Blade, a crime-mystery series starring a young cop chasing a group of nuclear terrorists; Parasyte, a sci-fi horror thriller involving a body-snatching alien wreaking havoc at a prep school; and Magic Night Rayearth, a sword-and-sorcery fantasy for girls. At five bucks a copy, the typical 175-page issue is a great Manga sampler, and an interesting peek into the community of Manga lovers. In addition to the stories, there’s also a letters page and a few short articles and contests (including a do-your-own dialogue contest) all designed to draw readers in and create a sense of community. All the stories are not exactly kept in their original black-and-white format though. Each story is printed on different colored paper. Interesting, but a little distracting, especially (as in at least one memorable instance) when the Sailor Moon story is printed on rather urinary yellow color stock.
