Aging Generation X-ers may have fond childhood memories of Saturday morning cartoons that served some higher purpose beyond selling action figures of the leading characters. For example, there were the environment-friendly adventures of Woodsy Owl (“Give a hoot! Don’t pollute!”), the upstanding animated symbol of all that was precious about our unspoiled wilderness. Alas, nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Turns out that behind Woodsy’s pristine forest home was a nasty old paper mill churning out issues of Woodsy Owl comics in a range of bright and doubtless carcinogenic colors. Gold Key, purveyors of fine, wholesome comics for young readers and shameless adapters of every single animated series ever (“Secret Squirrel,” anyone?) brought the Woodsy one’s adventures to the newsstand through the mid-70s.
