The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch

    (VG, 1994)
™ and ©1994 Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean

Mr. Punch may be a puppet, but he’s not a very nice man. The story has changed a bit over the past three hundred years, yet the basics remain. First, he takes Judy’s baby and throws it out the window. Then, when Judy presses him about it, he whacks her to death. A policeman comes to bring justice, but Punch dispenses with him as well. So it goes with a judge, a crocodile, and even the devil himself. With his high, squeaky voice, the murderous puppet is ever victorious. And it’s all just entertainment for the kiddies.

Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and Dave McKean (Cages) first collaborated on the acclaimed Violent Cases. In 1994, they teamed up again to bring readers this story about a boy’s strange visit to his uncle’s seaside arcade. There he meets a mysterious Punch and Judy man whose secrets are not restricted to bringing mad puppets to life in front of audiences of small children.
